My laptop cpu seems to run at 100% with only system
applications and aol running. The process that is using
up the cpu is svchost.exe. I checked my desktop with
only system applications and aol running, and it doesn't
use any cpu. How can i fix this problem?

Svchost is a catchall process that runs many services.

Get a better process monitor than Task Manager - I use Process
Explorer from http://www.sysinternals.com (free). Once you identify
the svchost process that is using the cpu cycles, you can look at what
services are running under it.

BlackViper's website http://www.blkviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm
has a section which identifies the services by name. Also, Process
Explorer will show what modules are part of svchost, and what company
wrote them.

If you see something that doesn't look like it belongs, go to Spybot
S&D and HijackThis - good tools for identifying things that don't
belong on your computer. SSD is pretty reliable by itself, but HJT
needs expert interpretation to tell you what you need to get rid of -
you get that at SWI Forums. Start with this article:
