Windows XP control of quotes when entering text

Ever since I got 2 new computers running Windows XP I
have been unable to figure out how to stop Windows from
controlling the use of single and double quotes when I
enter text.

For instance if I type the following:

The mayor said, and I quote "Trust me!" no quotes appear
until I have finished typing the line between quotes then
type the end-quote.

I would like to see quotes immediately and not have
Windows control when it thinks the quotes should appear.

Thanks

What software are you typing into? Some word processors have an
'intelligent quote' system to provide fancy, proper, open and close
quotes. Setting for that in Word for example is at its Tools - Auto
Correct - Auto Format (and Auto format as you type). But it is not a
matter for Windows itself.

Hi,

I get this problem with Word for Windows, Wordpad and
even something as simple as Notepad.

Another thing that happens is that, if the first
characters I type, in a new sentence, is an apostrophe
followed by a vowel I end up with an accented vowel. For
instance:

á
....or...
é

These were generated by typing apostrophe (or single-
quote) followed the vowel. In case this doesn't show up
in your reader the vowel has an accute accent on it.

Thanks for trying to help me.

Thanks Ken,

I just figured this out a few minutes ago before reading
your post. I changed to US only.

I'm not sure if Us International is the default when
installing Windows XP (mine was installed at the retail
store where I bought the PC). If so, I can imagine that
there are a few people out there scratching their heads
over this.

Thanks for your assistance.

You're welcome, and I'm glad you were able to figure it out
yourself. That's always more satisying than someone else telling
you the answer.

No, it's not the default. Someone made the choice.
