Windows XP continuous reboot problem

After trying to restore a win xp home ed. pc to an
earlier date, the pc froze. On an attempt to reboot, the
pc loads the drivers and then reboots. This is a
continuous cycle. Unable to boot into safe mode. Unable
to successfully select any option from the F8 menu.

Can a repair install be initiated without losing the data
that exists on the pc? If so how? How can I get to the
recovery console?

Any help would be appreciated.
