I have a valid windows xp pro COA, but have somehow misplaced the actual
recovery disks. Is there a way to get a copy of xp prop without having to pay
for a new coa?

"Recovery disks" indicates that you probably have an OEM version, most
likely one that came bundled with a new computer.

In that case you would need to contact the manufacturer/assembler of
the computer in order to obtain replacement disks.

Good luck

What about just getting a copy of xp pro directly from Microsoft? Is
That possible?

Not likely with OEM.

Just find a friend that has a generic OEM install CD and have them burn
you a copy of it, and use your Product Key for future installs and/or
repairs.

No, not if yours is an OEM version. Microsoft won't support it. Your
recourse is with the OEM vendor you bought it from.

Contact your computer vendor for a new disk.

Won't work if the original OEM version was BIOS Locked. The Product
Key will not activate.

Kurt wrote "generic OEM install CD".

The Product Keys for BIOS Locked OEM versions are specifically coded
as such and will not activate over the Internet. Telephone activation
requests for these product keys will normally be declined.

I know that Ron. That is not what I was addressing. Please re-read the
thread and Kurt's response. He was not talking about a BIOS locked OEM
version but specifically stated "generic OEM install CD". A "generic OEM
install CD" is not BIOS locked.

The "generic OEM install CD" plus which product key? If it is a
product key that was issued for a BIOS Locked OEM version then it will
not work. It is the product key more so than the CD that is critical
in this instance.

Good point, sorry Ron. I always forget about that. I wish it was all
more straightforward than this.

Don't we all wish it were that way?
