Windows XP can't recognize my HP Network Printer

R

Randy

I have a small workgroup os Windows 98 systems sharing an
HO Color Laser which has an HP JetDirectinternal print
server, all connected through CAT5 cabling throughout my
house. We have been using the IPX/SPX protocol for
printer sharing for ease of use.

I recently purchased a new PC with Windows XP home
edition, and had discovered that IPX/SPX is not supported
or available. The problem is, that whenever I try to
install the printer and use the JetDirect's factore
default IP address, Windows XP doesn't recognize it and
all prints error out.

I have Qwest broadband (VDSL) and they supply IP's
through their DHCP servers, but shouldn't I still be able
to communicate (install and recognize) the default IP on
the HP JetDirect adapter?

What should I do to get this working?

Thanks (in davance),

Randy

IPX/SPX is available and supported in Windows XP:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click your LAN connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Install.
5. Click Protocol.
6. Click Add.
7. Click "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol".
8. Click OK.

You can only communicate with the JetDirect's default IP address if
it's in the same subnet as your computer's IP address.

Hello Randy;
I had an identical problem. I did not solve it until I downloaded the new
"HP Install Network Printer Wizard" from HP. I was using an older version of
this wizard and it did not work. Try the new wizard it is outstanding in my
opinion.

Steve,

I have succesfuly installed the ipx/spx driver as you
suggested below. And now for the life of me I can't
figure out how to install the printer on the XP computer.
The printer is all set and ready for IPX/SPX, but the
only options in the printer wizard are TCP/IP and various
local connections (USB, Parallel, etc.).

I know what my LAN HW address is, and the Node Name. The
browse function never finds the printer, and it doesn't
work to type the name (\\NPI6750DE or \\0800096750DE).

I would be FOREVER GREATFUL for help with how to install
the printer in XP Home Edition when it's an IPX
printer!!!!

Thank you,

Randy

Melvin,

That worked!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

I installed the HP Install Network Printer Wizard and it
auto recognized the printer within about a minute. All
the rest was automated and we are up and operational.

What a great little application, thanks again!

Randy

You're welcome, Randy. I wish that I could tell you how to install
the printer, but I'm not familiar with JetDirect.

I recommend phoning HP technical support. They've always been very
knowledgeable and helpful when I've done it.
