when i try to install XP, it boots from the cd does a
systems check and then it goes to copy xp to my hard drive
then a error message is displayed say that it can't detect
a hard drive, but if i try to inatall 98, 98 setup can
find my hard drive, what do i do

Usually if one boots to xp cd,install xp,youre options are/should be,instal
over previous windows os,or a clean install of xp which then will reformat th
hd.For keeping 98,youll need to boot to 98 os,then in explorer install xp
You can boot to cd,install xp,but it will reformat the hd eliminating 98.

From your message, can we presume that you have a new Hard disk that has been installed, recognised by BIOS and formatted as FAT32? Also do you have the full version of Xp or the Upgrade version?

It is peculiar that Xp installation process cannot find the disk drive, but 98 does: most cases would be the reverse indicating that your hard drive has not been properly partitioned and formatted.

You can try going back to your supplier if this is a new system and getting them to sort out your problems as part of their responsibility for providing a properly functioning computer.

If you have built this yourself and you just want to get on with installing software etc, then go ahead and install 98, after all it only takes 45 - 60 minutes. After it is installed and all devices recognised and installed properly [don't attach printers, modems, or any other external devices except keyboard and mouse] then proceed with an Xp installation by inserting the Xp CD whilst 98 is running and perform an upgrade installation.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.
