Windows XP attempts to log in automatically using Deleted account

I recently had to delete a local account on a Windows XP
machine, the machine now insists on attempting to
automatically login using this deleted account, and stops
with an error message saying the username and password
are invalid. The welcome screen is not loaded, and the
computer just waits for a response. How can I rectify
this problem?
