Windows XP and no drive letter for secondary HD

The hard drive (c:\ drive)crashed, but it appears the
data is still intact (my daughter didn't back up as
requested). In an effort to salvage the data, I bought a
new drive, installed Windows XP Professional, and
installed the old drive as a slave. Everything works
fine, except I cannot assign a drive letter to the drive,
although I can clearly see it using Disk Management.

I am afraid to partition, because this would probably
destroy the very data I am trying to salvage.

Any thoughts on how to salvage the data?

With great appreciation,

Emil

Emil, try installing the older drive as Master on the Secondary IDE
Channel on the Motherboard. You may
have to remove your Cdrom or other Optical Drives Temporarily
