Hi,

I seem to be having a problem with automatic downloads for my virus
scanner, as well as the downloads for windows (or office) update. My
computer seems to be unable to retrieve automatic updates. At startup it
contacts McAfee and shows the availability of the latest dat-files in
the system tray but is unable to download them, it get stuck on 0%
download and after that just stops, although the manual updates work
just fine. Same thing goes for the windows updates, my system tray shows
the yellow shield to indicate the updates and I can click it to start
the download but then the icon immediately disappears and I have to
retrieve the downloads via the windows-site (which again, works just
fine). Now the thing is that this problem only occurs at the office. At
home, with a different provider, automatic updates are no problem what
so ever. Could somebody direct me towards a solution for this problem ?
Is this an issue of my internet provider or just a setting in my windows
XP that needs to be changed?

Any help would be appreciated ...

OS: Windows XP Pro, SP2

TIA

It is not clear if you are using the same computer at home and at work.

Try setting the Automatic Updates in the Control Panel to download and
install them automatically.

The yellow shield only appears if you enable the inform me of the updates
and allow me to download them option.

I discovered that I had to do that in order to get Windows Defender to
install its updates. If I used the inform option, it got stuck in a loop of
installing the same update over and over.

Yes I'm using the same computer both at home and at work.
But I don't think the problem is related to just the windows updates, it
seems to be a problem with every sort of automatic updates.

If it works at home but not at the office, I would very much doubt it is an
XP setting. Either the office ISP settings are blocking or perhaps a router
at the office is blocking.

Quite obvious that there is blocking in process at work - either
software or hardware based. Discuss with your systems administrator -
could be their system, or your settings in McAfee (is it virus +
f/wall version)
