Hi all

Haven't used the PC for the last week, went to switch it on but it gets
stuck in the early startup screen of XP and then comes up with a screen
informing me that there is a problem and to choose between safe mode, safe
mode with network support etc. etc. If I try any of these it returns to the
same screen again after trying to start again.

I tried running the install CD to reinstall but it comes up with the
following message :

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

followed by STOP 0x00000050 (0xF9001147,0x00000000,0xF9001147,0x00000000)

anybody any idea what that means ? is it a memory problem ?

Thanks for any help
Chris

It could be a lot of things, but a memory problem is probably the most
likely. Easy enough to check - www.memtest86.com, make a floppy, boot
from it, run it overnight. if it passes, you can more or less scratch
this as a possible problem.

If you have two memory stick (always a good plan!) try it with just one
- it may run like molasses, but if it doesn't crash then you found the
problem real fast (obviously when I say 'try one', try both of them one
at a time - the chance both died at once is very, very small)
