Windows won't start

Hi, my computer won't boot to Windows. I get a black screen with a flashing
prompt in the upper left hand corner of my screen. I ran recovery console
(from my XP CD) and tried to locate files on my C drive using DIR and I get a
message that the path is not valid. It recognizes a D drive though. I did
initially have an error message on my screen but I hit return and it went to
the black screen, followed by the flashing prompt. After repeated start-ups
that message has not been back. I'd like to know of a solution, but mainly
I'd like to know the likelyhood that all my files could be lost.
