windows won't start--corrupt file?!

When I tryto turn on my computer I get a message that
says:
Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I tried doing set-up in recovery mode but I didn't get
very far. If anyone knows what to do, please let me know.
My success as the next great American novelist is in your
hands!!
