i have new computer running windows vista premium with norten internet
security recently my subscription expired so i went out and purchased the
latest version 2008. installed it on my computer being careful to follow all
the correct steps.everything appears to be running really well but 1 . norton
recommends i use their firewall and ask me to turn windows off is this ok to
do?. And if so how can i stop norton popups asking to turn theirs on. 2 .On
my security center page my malware protection is red and says check settings
virus protection not found but on my norton security page it says virus
protection secure is there a problem and how can i repair this .It appears
the too are working seperately instead of together.. i am a new user and i
would greatly appreciate your feed back thank you for your time.....bill

My advice would be to return Norton for a refund and uninstall it from your
machine. Norton always has a habit of causing more problems than it solves.

Use the built in Windows Firewall, Windows Defender and a light-weight
anti-virus solution like NOD32, AVG Free or Avast.

The solution is to uninstall norton.

Ok maybe this is not a nice joke as you are tackling with a problem here and
after paying for it but:

A simple virus program like AVG does almost the same job without sucking
system resources.

Easy to install and uninstall also....

I purchased norton two times... but regret now that I did.

(I'm not going to get into the Norton discussion here.)

As long as you run one of the firewalls, it is ok. Windows Firewall is
disabled in Security Center:

Control Panel > Security > Security Center > Windows Firewall

Enable Norton's firewall in the program's settings, it should not pop up
further warnings when you have done so. Symantec support:

http://www.symantec.com/support/
2 .On

settings
virus protection not found but on my norton security page it says virus

There is a general fix to this problem, take a look at my post in this
thread:

But be aware: Norton is the barnacle of the software world. To remove Norton
usually requires the sooper-sekret removal tool available from the Symantec
website.

NIS is a disaster waiting to happen. Return it for a refund if you can. If
you can't uninstall it anyway.

If you don't mind more bloat on top of an already bloated Vista! Norton is
nothing but trouble. But hey, if you are happy with it....

We've serviced serveral Vista machines in the past few months where 360
was nothing but trouble. Windows Explorer sluggish, and network
connectivety was brought to it's knees, lucky to even get an ip lease
fro mthe local DHCP. Each case we've dealt with was very similar so this
seems to be a consistant problem.

Actually OVer the last few years Norton has been very problematic (and
resource hoggish.)

As others have said, have a look at AVG and Avast. Free, reliable, and
light weight on resources.
