Windows Vista - cannot update -

I am unable to receive updates. When I go to Windows Update link, I get a
message "Windows could not search for new updates" and "Error(s) found: Code
80070424. I then went to Microsoft's website, downloaded an update and got
the message "Installer encountered and error: 0x80070424. The specific
service does not exist as an installed service." I then ran chkdsk and tried
it again with the same results. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate on a 32
bit machine. I have recently installed a new router but dont believe it is
the cause.

Respectfully read the following

(1) It relates by following those fixes which will most probably fix your issue in Windows Update be it in Win98,Win XP,Vista etc etc
(2) It is info in the signature that Mr. Ferguson uses for all his replies. If you cannot open it then obviously you have a bigger problem with you computer than not being able to Update

(3) Do a System Repair or a System Restore to start with

Sorry but none of this appears to address the initial problem of getting the
massage that windows could not seardh for new updates. Additionally, I have
two other computers on my LAN running XP and, using the Windows Update link
in the control panel, neither of them can access Windows update. Now I think
it may have to do with the router I installed. Do you know what ports must
be opened? and whether it is upload side or download side?

Thank you again for your time in responding.

OK . Just to make you happy and satisfied and a bit more appreciative.

You do have it and do not say "Anti Virus does not say so "

Judging by the ever-increasing number of posts here in the past few months
that are similar to yours, the behavior may be due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot
infection, all protected by a rootkit infection.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
