windows visa stuck in "Installing updates 1 of 7"

I rebooted my laoptop this morning and it rebooted to "Please do not power
off or unplug your machine. Installalling updates 1 of 7". It's been stuck
like this for several hours. I've pressed the power button (didn't have to
hold it down) and it rebooted back up to the same screen. I did this twice
but am afraid to try anything too drastic.

I can't afford to have it be down all day and I'm geting impatient. Any
suggestions?

Hello. I also had this issue after installing Vista SP1 Beta on
my notebook and desktop. After several manual boot ups
and several hours later everything worked great, be patient.

I did a couple manual reboots this morning but here it is almost 8hrs later
and it is still Installing 1 of 7 ... It appears to be not locked up because
the curser is working and the dots after the 7 are rotating every few seconds
so at this point I'm hanging in there and don't want to undo anything causing
it to start over... I'm not real happy about it though..
thanks...

Well, it depends on your laptop's CPU I guess. If it is a powerful machine
it will go thru all the routines fast. Also you have to take into account
the speed of your Internet connection. If it is something wireless or even
worse, a dial up, then you should perhaps take a vacation to Hawaii or a
cruise to the Caribbean and when you are back you will see your laptop
smiling at you. It also depends on how much windows software you have
already installed. it also depends on whether you have some malicious
software in the registry.

During all such installs Vista often needs to check with the central server
for additional bits and pieces and this slows it down.

When it happened to me first time I completely freaked out. I actually broke
a few completely healthy systems because I began installing a clean install
over the one that was updating.

Now when Vista dwindle to the point that I feel it is asleep I just bite my
tongue and take a shower or do shopping.

Go to windows update if you can, and check for any updates. Download and
reboot.
You might have to do this a couple times.

That's what I've been doing. Exactly what you said. I also leave it
overnight with Internet connected to take care of business.

Yes, I relate to all you said, I usaully don't skimp when it comes to haveing
the right stuff: Dell Latitude D820, Window Vista Ultimate, 2 GB DDR2 RAM,
High Speed Cable internet, I run registrysmart software daily, WebRoot Spy
Sweeper, Windows live OneCare, etc, etc... I have a built-in wireless
broadband card so I'm not wired up directly. At one time this morning I
turned off my wireless broadband/bluetooth switch and then turned it back on.
I thought my wireless broadband card didn't work unless the PC was booted up
and initializes the connection. I think I'll try and hook up a cat5 direct
connection while it is still in the same state it has been all day
"Installing update 1 of 7" and see if anything changes.. I plan on leaving it
alone all night but if nothing changes in the morning and it is still stuck I
think I'm going to throw it real hard against a wall... I wish..
thanks for your input.

Cat5 has been obsolete for about 6 years. You should probably use CAT6 or at
the very least CAT5e with your quality hardware.

I have the same problem on a new Dell (just opened the box yesterday). Only
my message is at "8 of 18". Seems like 3 + hours to install 18 updates on a
new system is way too long, even if using a wireless network connection.

I have nothing "unique" installed, just MS Office 2007 on top of Vista Home
Premium.

Thanks,
Ken

We'll, I'm all good now. Last night I got impatient, rebooted and hit f2, f12
and got it into an ms dos choice screen where I chose to run a throrough
diagnosis which I did and found no issues. I also ran a memory test which
passed ok. From there I exited out and choose the safe mode to boot up. I
imediately backed up everything to my external HD then went to automatic
updates and ended up downloading those 7 updates in no time at all. I've
rebooted to normal, my system is working flawless thank God... thanks to
all for your input... PS. Cat5 is far from being obsolete. Cat3, maybe, not
Cat5.

I think the lesson to be learned here is------Don't set your system for
automatic install of updates. OK to download them automatically but install
them yourself. Then, only install one or two at a time, don't do the whole
shebang at once. To me, it seems a lot less risky and you at least have
some control over what's going on.

It is a good lesson that is hard to follow. It creates boredom and takes fun
out of even seeing your computer.

OK- probably a dumb questions here. Does a computer with Vista need to
be connected to the net with a fast connection to run properly?

I've hunted this newsgroup down just to answer this. I'm in a similar
situation to the above writer. A new Dell XPS with VISTA was set up last
summer by our interns and has never run at an acceptable speed. Its
supposed to be a fast machine. Basic vanilla applications on it along
with a lot of "fun" crap that came from DEll. AV is McAfee and with
Defender, seems to be a major part of the slow down but that can't be
all the problem. I'm pretty sure the computer is mechanically OK- its
our dialup that makes it nearly useless. We run 26.4kbps most of the
time. Does Vista constantly call out to other sites before it does
anything? We're probably a month or two backed up on Windows updates
too. How can I load them onto a cd from another source and then manually
feed them into the slow machine? Many thanks!
