You have a few choices because "It's MY pc".
1. Leave it there since it is there as part of the Beta and will be gone on
the released version.
2. Remove Vista Beta and install a different OS, it will be gone.

And for those that want it there...

The reg key is HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop[PaintDesktopVersion]

0 = off, 1 = on

If you look at the reg key in Vista, it's set to 0, so yeah, it's hardcoded
for now.

Yeah, 0 always mean off or disabled. The registry setting doesn't do
anything right now so there's no way (that I know of) to turn it off.

Just curious...why would anyone want to hide the fact that they're
running a BETA version that isn't completely stable?

The only reason I can think of is to convince others that they have a
Vista RTM or final to deceive others and make it appear as if they
have legitimate software.

I'm just throwing this out for fun...

By the way...why not just drag a copy of Explorer to the lower right
corner to cover it up? If one enables a setting it will automatically
load whenever they restart.

Mwah-ha-ha! I remember a thread somewhere, probably in an XP NG, where folks
were arguing about whether XP MCE (Media Center Edition) was based on XP Pro
or XP Home... because of this thread, I turned on PaintDesktopVersion and it
puts up "Windows XP Professional". Guess that answers THAT question...

Bill,

With me it is a "neat, clean, and control issue". I have a blank black
desktop, except for the "version logo". I want NOTHING on my desk top, I
want my machine my way.
It's a matter of principle here, just as it was in my ranting about the
logon sound (which is now gone). I don't like Vista making decisions for me.
My therapist says I am making progress and I'm feeling much better
now.....................................................................................;o)

There is a way to remove it but it's a bit complicated and possibly risky to
your system's health. You can find the details in the Vista section of the
MSFN forums (www.msfn.org)

I tried it myself though, the desktop is now clean and everything still
works fine. :)

What I meant was we "Assume" 0=off, Change it to 1 and see what happens...

Catweazle,

Thanks for the tip. I edited the file, but cannot get proper ownership of
the original to replace it. I may have changed too many things too fast and
now have to go back and see what I did.

Thanks again, I have a modified file ready to ''paste'' as soon as I get
proper permission from the proper owner...................

C

Catweazle

Click the Advanced tab in the file's security properties and choose "Take
ownership" if I remember correctly. The forum post gives a more detailed
explanation.

B

BChat

I have that done OK - when I go to copy the modified file it says it
"can't be completed because the file is open in another program
Close the file and try again"

I have no clue what this means - the modified file is in a folder on C:\, as
suggested in the tutorial
?????

C

Catweazle

Did you rename the original first, give it a bak extension or something. If
that didn't work you might try closing Windows Explorer and using the
command prompt to move the file.

Good luck.

B

BChat

Progress.......by renaming the modified file, pasting it into the System
folder, renaming the original, deleting the original, then renaming the
modified to the original name - all is well - ALMOST.

When I read the instructions on how to modify the file, it looked like two
sets of quotes on each line, so I put " " - but it came out as "/n (or some
other crazy thing). I then put two pair of apostrophes with 2 space in
between - '' '' - looks the same, but isn't.
When I just rebooted the watermark is gone and guess what? Two rows of two
sets of apostrophes in it's place.
'' ''
'' ''

More than a file modification - an
adventure........................................thanks for the tip.
Now I can go back and modify the modification.
