Hey folks,

Is it possible to save the Windows Updates that windows automatically
downloads?

I'm downloading them from a dial-up connection and they are taking
forever.

I'd like to be able to save them to disk or cd to be able to reuse
them in the event that I have to reinstall XP for any reason.

Thanks,

Windows update creates a log file into "c:\windows\Windows Update.log". That
might help you.

Make a note of the updates you've had to install then....

Go the main windows update site
ie http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

and look for & click something like "PersonalizeWindows Update" under "other
options"
Then check the box "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog" and save
your settings

Then click the new "Windows Update Catalog" link that appears under the "see
also" section
Choose the updates you want to download and add them all to the "download
basket"

The initial download is an exe file that is put in the Temporary
Internet Files folder. and you can copy that out once the download is
complete (and before any reboot or closing of the Internet Explorer on
Windows Update). Helps to clear the TIF folder in advance, just to make
the files easier to find when you go to Internet Options - Click
Settings, click View Files

To the original poster: So you are on dial-up & updates are slow, so you want
to save in case you ever have to re-install Windows? Why not order the free
updates CD. I understand they are accepting people who want the SP2 update.
But in any event they do have an update CD free that had updates up until a
certain point.. it was up to Feb I believe...

There is no pre-ordering yet for SP2

I suppose I should look into this..

The only thing is, how 'free' is the CD? It might be free, but I don't
have a credit card to pay for shipping to Ireland.

For some reason I can't order it in Ireland. I don't know why.
Microsoft's European headquarters are in Dublin.

To hell with them. Their thinking: It's a small country so we won't
bother supplying them with the updates. What, you think I don't need
it? Pricks.

Not you guys, the people who decided that I shouldn't get an updates
CD because I live in Ireland.

You guys are sound, because you actually try to help people. I know
you've helped me.

I'm done complaining now. I might as well keep downloading. By the
time it's done, I'll probably be just about ready to start downloading
Service Pack 2.

Well then I was mis-informed. A Yahoo chatroom club friend told me a couple
of days ago that I could. I don't think I mis-understood. I'll ask him when
I can contact him and get a URL, or get corrected in what I thought I heard.
