Windows Updates

I am having problems anytime I try to do a Window XP update of any kind. I keep getting error messages to this regard
"Setup can not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure crypotgraphic service is running on computer." I did verify that the cryptographic service is not disabled. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I have given up! It seems like something has deleted files off my computer as not to recognize any updates from Microsoft. Could this be possible?
