windows updates page not allowed to run activex scripts, but...

M

monticus

I am running XP on a Dell Inspiron 2650. It is connected
to cable access using a Linksys BEFSX41 wired router. The
router is not set to block ActiveX scripts.

When I try to manually update windows, I am told that my
current security settings do not allow ActiveX scripts to
run on that page. I have added
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com,
http://*windowsupdate.com, and
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com to the trusted sites
list.

I cannot for the life of me figure out what else I need to
do to get these updates.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Monticus

Hi monticus :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Problems accessing secure sites/ cannot install 128 bit encryption
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers2.htm#secure_sites

or...........

Disable the LMZ (Local Machine Zone) lockdown of SP2:

To allow any Website to run Scripts and ActiveX controls on your computer:

To totally disable the Local Machine Zone restriction (for running Active
Content, although, not recommended):

Open Internet Explorer
Tools> Internet Options
On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section of the list.
Select the 'Allow active content to run in files on My Computer'
Check the box next to it
Click OK.

To accomplish this via the Registry, modify the following registry value:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN (should be all on
one line)

In the right-pane, create a new REG_DWORD named iexplore.exe and set it to
0

Values:

0 - Allows a Webpage to run active content in your computer
1 - Disallows a Webpage from running active content in your computer

To allow any CD to run Scripts and ActiveX controls on your computer:

Open Internet Explorer
Tools>Internet Options
On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section of the list
Select the 'Allow active content from CDs to run on My Computer'
Check the box next to it
Click OK
or
Allow active content to run in files on My Computer - Windows XP Service
Pack 2:

Hope this helps
