Windows Updates for Dialup Users

Wayne Wengert

I am helping some senior citizens with basic computer issues. Most of them
have dialup connections. Is there a way I can download the Windows updates
to a CD (I have broadband) and use that to update their systems? Is there an
option to purchase the updates on CDs?

Depending on your location, MS may supply sp's on cd for a small admin
charge.
You can use Administrative Update downloads on MS site to save the updates
for inclusion on a cd

Thanks for that link. Am I correct that I would need the SP2 update and then
all of the other "Essential" patches? I assume I would install SP2 and then
the other patches in date order?

Exactamundo!! I believe the release date of Sp2 was 2004?

This is probably the better site I ever found for the downloads.....Only
drawback is ya have ta download em one at a time......

I wish MS would hurry up & release SP3, it's about freakin due with
those gazillion updates after SP2.........

Hi Wayne,
If you have to download one at a time, then download from the official MS
site - not that I know of anything wrong with the link suggested.
If you are updating to SP2 then I would say that it is even more sensible to
get them all from MS.
You can still get the SP2 on disk free from MS - that will save you time.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

After that, there are up to 70 further security/critical updates.
I don't know if you are aware of WGA/WGN - may be a good idea to avoid those
two to start with.

This is a good read if you need it

Some updates get upset with different AV progs - and considering the time
each system may be connected to the net on dial-up, I think your choice of
burning to disk and loading is the best.
Then you can disconnect each system from the net and disable the AV and
firewall.
That's how I update all security/critical from MS now.

Cymbal Man Freq.

It takes the Windows Update site about 6 minutes just to do what it does before
it shows what updates are available while on dial-up, maybe 3 minutes on DSL
(when M$ Office is installed too).

For instance, you download .NET Framework 1.1, then you download the SP1 of it,
then there is a patch for that. That is 18 minutes of waiting for Windows Update
to scan your computer for 3 updates, on top of the hours of downloading the
updates on dial up.

The dial up machine I've been working on this week has had just over 100 updates
added to it this year (not all by me though).
Dial up and Windows Update is total BS, avoid it with a vengeance.
