Windows Updates fail to install

Sound and video were breaking up on my computer. To fix the problem the local
computer shop reformated my hard drive and then reinstalled everything.
Everything else seems to works fine now except Windows Updates. I can
download updates but when I try to install them the installation process
fails. I currently have 3 updates which are downloaded but will not install.

Critical update for Windows XP (KB886185)
Security update for Windows Media Player Plugin (KB911564)
Update for Windows XP (KB910437)

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

Thanks in advance,

Pete.

Hey,

Since a reformat of the HDD was done.
Using which XP CD you did that.
Coz you need to reformat using the same XP CD with which u installed the OS
in ur computer.
Had it been a different CD which is used to do the reformat, then u might
not be able to do the windows update.

Hi,

The issues can be caused due to various reasons. You can try out the
following steps:

1. Click on Start->Run and type services.msc
2. Right click automatic update service and stop it
3. Go to My Computer
4. Click on the C: drive
5. Go to Windows folder and locate the folder called "software distribution
folder" and then right-click on the folder and rename it
6. Also go to system32 folder under windows and right click on catroot2
folder and rename it
6. Go back to services.msc and restart the automatic update service
7. Restart the computer and tried to install the updates again. It should work

If it does not work try creating a new user account and try to install the
updates from that account
