I updated windows and QuickTime, and this resulted in a
reduction of 197MB in my free disk space, some 20 times the
size of the downloads. The excess files are not in Temporary
Internet Files or in any Temp. What is going on? Can I
regain my space?
The system is WinXP Home.
Thanks!

More than likely, a System Restore point was created when you
updated Windows. If you're curious to see how large this
particular restore point was take a look in the C:\System
Volume Information\-restore folder. Look for a folder named
RPxxx, where xxx is a three digit number, created the same day
you performed the update. That would account for some of the
disk space usage.
Note: System Volume Information is a hidden folder. Make sure
you have Folder Options configured to allow hidden and system
files to be viewed.
Also, if you go to the Start Menu -> All Programs ->
Accessories -> System Tools and launch System Restore you can
check on the calendar to see when restore points were created
and the action responsible for their creation. An entry titled
Software Distribution Service 2.0 indicates an update through
Microsoft.
If you're concerned about disk space you can reduce the amount
reserved for System Restore by running System Properites from
Control Panel. Click on the System Restore tab and move the
slider to the left. The default is 12% of your hard drive. In
most systems, 8% is plenty. Keep in mind that this will reduce
the overall number of available restore points.
You can also delete all but the most recent restore point
through Disk Cleanup.
