Dave

I am unable to use windows update. I get a message stating that due to my
security settings windows cannot load activeX controls on this page and page
may not load correctly. It never gets past initial screen or scans for
updates. I tried setting security to the lowest level just to see if that
worked but it didn't. I tried to manually set all activeX stuff in custom
to prompt me, but no luck so I put it back to medium security, or reset to
defaults. That is not working either. any help would be appreciated.
Thank You, Dave

You should see a bar above the body of IE where you can click to install the
ActiveX.

If you have installed SP2 it restricts use of Active X in the Internet
Zone. Best put sites that you trust (like Update) in the Trusted Zone,
so you are still protected against malicious ones. Internet Options -
Security, select Trusted sites and click Sites. There Add the relevant
URLs
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
you will need to uncheck the box at the bottom

Just be careful with Trusted Zones. Phishing or Social Engineering can
mimic sites and deceive the user into thinking they are on their Bank or
other password protected site. There have been several exploits used
that can make "Fake" sites appear to be valid. (EarthLink, Banks, eBay).

Currently SP2 should not be exposed to Phishing exploits - but new
stuff appears quite frequently.

If you put ANY sites into the Trusted zone make absolutely sure that
the URL is indeed the site you think it is. Also, Never click into a link
in email, etc. Always use an existing favorite that you know goes to the
proper site. When on the site, Double-Click the little lock (SSL) and
read the Certificate for the site.

One more thing - https, denotes a secure site - I would not uncheck
the option to allow non-https sites in the Trusted Zone. It's just too easy
to drop sites in that Zone and then forget they are in there. Most folks
don't even look at or notice which Zone they are in when browsing.

All it takes is just one incident with "Phishing" and you may end up with
a case of Identity Theft.

Maybe you're correct Alex in getting past stringent settings by using
the Trusted Zone. I used to use a list of Trusted sites, but just decided it
was way too dangerous.

Alex Nichol,

Tried your suggestion to Dave, did not work for me. My dilemma is as
follows,

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Microsoft Windows that helps you
get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update. If you are looking for updates to Microsoft products for
Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.
Have tried for months to resolve this issue with no success nothing in KB
articles or posted in news groups have not worked even a couple MS
Professionals I guess have given up, since I have not heard from them for a
few weeks. AU updates work but accessing update site brings up the above
mentioned site. Using WINXP HOME SP2 IE6.
