Since MS revamped the windows update site in preparation for SP2, my PC
seems to hang on the screen that says "checking for latest version of
windows update software". Nothing happens no progress bar no nothing. Have I
been taken to a broken link or something. The first time I used it ,it said
SP2 was available. At the time I think I chose not to install it. I'm still
on SP1 but think I've lost the use of update. Any offers??

You might want to post this question to the experts in the Windows
Update Newsgroup and scan the messages for possibilities.

Also you can take a look here:

Thanks I didn't know there was a NG for windows update when there are so
many others for XP. Anyway I followed a link on a post I read. It sorted out
windows update for me,on reboot it automatically detected SP2 was available
..I took the plunge & 15 mins later it was installed & here I am now using
SP2!!!

Hi

Fyi, microsoft.public.windowsupdate is a better newsgroup for Windows
Update questions.

Anyway, you could try this and see if it helps:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Anyway, I never uses Windows Update to install a service pack.

To install SP2 without using WU:

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a

If you think that download is to large, you can get the same
file on a CD from Microsoft.

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:

Also, before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
followng sites:

How to successfully install Windows XP Service Pack 2.

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a SP2 installation, take a look here:
