Windows Update

I have Win XP home and the Windows update runs automatically and warns me
before installing anything.

Receintly I noticed that on one of my partitioned drives there is a rather
strange folder called that has an subfolder called update with an exe in it
called wupdt.exe I suspect that this is a virus r hack.
Where does the real Windows update run from and would XP ever need to create
a seprate folder from which toi run the Windows Update. I imagaine it would
be in C:\Windows\System32....

any help is appreciated.
