My sons compaq computer has been running windows update
for over a week. As a consequence I can not log onto
internet. All attempts to stop or quit program have
failed. Technical support from AOL, network provider &
maker useless.

I can't imagine what you mean by "running Windows Update for over a
week". Please either repost with a better description of the problem or
contact a local computer repair person to check out the machine. And of
course, the first question is always "What does a scan with a current
antivirus program (meaning a version not earlier than 2002 and using
updated virus definitions) show?"

Post back with details about exactly what the computer is doing, when
this started (what changed, etc.), and what you mean by "all attempts
to stop or quit program..." mean.
