Windows Update

Kate

I have set Windows Update to notify me when updates are available but
not to download or install them. When the notification symbol appears
on the Taskbar I go to Start/Windows Update and connect to the site
that way. For the first time, the other day I clicked the symbol and
selected "Download", but once this was done, I didn`t get an option to
install the updates and didn`t know where they were downloaded to, so
I then downloaded and installed them in my usual way. I have a tape
drive for backing up my system and since then have been getting error
messages saying that certain files could not be backed up because they
are busy and I wondered if they were the original downloads that
weren`t installed. Some of the busy files are :

\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS
INDEX.BTR
INDEX.MAP
MAPPING.VER
MAPPING1.MAP
MAPPING2.MAP
OBJECTS.DATA
OBJECTS.MAP

When I try to open a .map file, for example, I get a message telling
me that the file could not be opened because it is in use by another
program. Does anyone recognise these as being to do with Windows
Update, please, and if they are, is it safe to delete them?

Many thanks
Kate

Hi Kate,
You mention the Automatic Updates. (I presume your pc is using Win XP).
From my experience with Automatic Updates, I have to click the icon (in system notification area [aka Systray, of old]) if it sits there.
That forces the mini-window to get to the foreground (on your screen). Make your choice. And repeat click in s.n. area if it does it again.
This way you get to watch it.

The files & folder you mentioned are not related to Automatic Updates or Windows Update.
And, no, do NOT remove them.

I'd suggest, when you encounter the 'files in use/busy' issue, that you close your open apps, then retry your program. Last resort: logoff Windows & log back in. Then try your backup or other program.

Thanks for the response, Maurice. Yes, I am using Win XP Home. When
I clicked the icon in the Sysnot area (!), I had the option to
download the updates, which I chose, but was not asked if I wanted to
install them. Where do they go when they have been downloaded, do you
know? When I didn`t get the option to install, I accessed Windows
Updates using Start/Windows Updates. A system check informed me that
what I had previously downloaded (or so I thought) was not on my
computer, so I clicked "Install" and everything went through OK.

Regarding the busy files, apart from those I listed in my earlier
post, the rest are .log files. I went to My Computer/Manage/Services
and paused WMI. While it was paused I was able to access all the
previously-busy files. Is this significant? Anyway, to save getting
error messages every time I run a backup session I have de-selected
all the busy files. If I do have a major system failure, I am sure
that the log files can`t be important, and if the
\system32\wbem\Repository\FS files are, well, that`s my tough luck!

Thank you again
Kate
