Hello.

I have a Windows XP Professional SP1 computer that cannot download
windows updates.

When I go to the Windows Update site, it says that a new version of
the installer is available and there is an install button. When I
click on the install button it downloads something then hangs at
"registering...100%"

Obviously the new version of the installer isn't installed and
doesn't install.

I have been successful in installed the latest updates from the
Windows Catalog but the intended automatic download would be much
easier.
Upgrading the system to Service Pack 2 is not an option since this is
a work computer and Service Pack 2 is not yet authorized.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks.

You cross posted to several groups but forgot the one group you should
have posted to - the Windows Update newsgroup:
