windows update

i recently purchased and install Windows Upgrade. I
previously used Windows ME. The XP appears to be working
properly. However, I can't update the program via the MS
site. Whenver, I try to update the program I recieve the
following message. "Thank you for your interest in Windows
Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update."

Since I am using XP, I have no clue whats wrong and how to
fix the problem.
