windows update virus message

I just completed a complete reformat and reinstall of windows xp pro.
While downloading security updates, I recieved a error message saying my
registry may be infected with a virus and it directed me to a website, www.
uric.net, to get a registry cleaner.
Is this this a message from microsoft, or is it just spam?

Thanks

Spam or worse.
My guess is you did not have a firewall enabled BEFORE connecting the
network cables:

Without a firewall and with an internet connection, you are vulnerable to
attack whether you do anything or not.

The fact you were downloading security updates from Windows Update is
irrelevant since the same would have happened if you had walked away instead
of updating the computer.

It is a con job !

To disable the Windows Messenger Service, you can open a Command Prompt and type the
following commands...

sc stop Messenger
sc config Messenger start= disabled

You need to install WinXP SP2 !

I don't know if firewall was enabled, but my internet connection was hooked
up the whole time. I'll have to remember that in the future.
thanks
