Windows Update Service pack error

Luke

When i go to windows update from my internet and try to
download and install the critical updates/service pack,
and click on the windows xp service pack 1, it begins to
download but once it extracts files, an error occurs. i
get the big red X, with this error message, Windows XP
SP1 is incompatible with this version of Windows. For
more information, contact Microsoft. when i click on
details from the help and support center it says the
window couldnt load and the page can not be displayed.
It then says installation complete and to restart the
computer but clearly nothing happens. If there is any
help you can give me i would really appreciate it, my
computer is running very slow and teh CPU usage sometimes
reaches 100%. Please help this sick computer.

.
'slow operation' and 'high CPU usage' go hand in hand with
some type of infection - virus/spyware/trojan/etc.,
although there are other reasons as well.

Have you taken care of the security basics?

If you aren't already behind a firewall then activate the
one that comes with XP - run Help and Support and search
'firewall'.

Update and run your anti-virus program. If you don't have
one then online scans are available at:
http://security.symantec.com
http://www.pandasoftware.es/activescan/activescan-com.asp
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/

Keep in mind that it's much better to have your anti-virus
program on your computer so you can use its 'auto protect'
feature.

Run Google and search for both 'Ad-Aware' and 'Spybot'.
They are donationware. Update and run both a couple of
times a week. SpywareBlaster is also worth having.

free trojan scan

If you do find a trojan the following advice comes courtesy

Trojans are stealthy and not always found by anti-virus
software. If you find suspicious processes running or task
manager or regedit is being killed after opening, you might
want to try one of the following tools to check for trojans
(after scanning with at least two anti-virus tools to get
rid of the easy stuff).

DiamondCS TDS-3 - Trojan Defence Suite (TDS), leading
anti-trojan system for Windows: http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/

Mischel Internet Security - TrojanHunterT: Finds and
removes trojans: http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter.jsp

Hopefully something here will help you get back on track.
Good luck.
