Windows Update Problem

W

Willy

I get the below message when I run Windows Update> I purchased this XP at
Wal-Mart so I wouldn't think piracy is an issue.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
Cannot Validate The Product Key

The product key used to install Windows is not valid. Please contact your
system administrator or retailer immediately to obtain a valid product key.
You may also contact Microsoft Corporation's Anti-Piracy Team by emailing
(e-mail address removed) if you think you have purchased pirated Microsoft
software. Please be assured that any personal information you send to the
Microsoft Anti-Piracy team will be kept in strict confidence.

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows
Update.

Try this
Reactive windows.

This was from a Microsoft website, but I modified for home and pro
users.

This will only work if your version of xp is LEGAL and 30 days have
not passed. Still might work even if the 30 days have passed if you
have xp sp1 or greater.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version\WPAEvents

In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to
activate Windows, and then click Next. Click Change Product key.
Type the same product key you use to install windows xp in the New key
boxes, and then click Update. If you are returned to the previous
window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer

Activate Windows.
Restart Computer
Check to see if windows is activated
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
Click OK.

Turn on Window Default firewall. Some programs will attack the
activation files.

Run Windows Upate

Side note Thank for showing proof the activation is a bad idea.
