windows update not working

I'm using vista (latest sp).

Since about a month windowsupdate isn't working anymore. Starting from IE 7
, I do get the settings window, but the windows stays white and the little
clock near the mousepointer simply keeps truning for ages.
Chosing windowsupdate directly from the settings window results in exactly
the same problem.
