I downloaded and installed the latesy 8 important updates. On restarting I
got a message imprinted on the lower r/h corner of my screen that "this
copy of windows is not genuine". So I system restored to yesterday and all
is now OK. Anyone else had a similar problem or can offer any advice or
comment please?

You may be prompted to activate Windows Vista on a computer on which
Windows Vista was already activated by a Volume License or OEM installation:

Which Is Total *BS*
More reason to go back to XP

Getting tired of this crap. Better not happen to me. I'm getting sick of
making calls to Inform them My copy is legit.

I agree. I'm all about keeping things 'secure' and not letting people
steal, but at some point, I as a customer am going to say forget it and go
somewhere else. I've ponied up for my copy of legit Vista Ultimate but I
don't expect to have to prove it all the stinken time.

I'd be pissed if I walked into a store and on my way out I was asked where I
purchased everything I'm wearing and provide receipts for them.

A certain amount of reasonableness has to come into play. I didn't pay all
that money to sit on the phone talking to a computer (or even worse, someone
with a dialect I can't understand) that is giving me a hard time because my
key is already active.

They do over do it a tad, don't they? Kind like getting too big for
their britches or something like that ... I got XP and Ubuntu. XP for
games and Ubuntu for real work with no need to call anyone for
permission to use it.

As far as Vista is concerned, I think that it is a taste of what's to
come, Vienna and serves as a testing ground for tester who pay to test
it. I wouldn't even consider getting it until after SP2, if then.

X64 Windows Vista Ultimate Edition RTM, And The Results Were Sloppy At Best
(The Reboot Process Was Horrible), Just FYI.

P.S. In My Opinion, The Consumer Product Safety Commission Should Force
Microsoft To Recall Windows Vista RTM As A Defective Product, Just FYI.

When they refund me I will. But then again, If I keep my copy I get to bitch
more and more every time this crap happens.

You can just keep being a slave to Microsoft and vista.

"In My Opinion, The Consumer Product Safety Commission..."
What have they said when you made your complaint?
Have you expressed that opinion where it counts? Or just here?
Like most agencies, they wait for a valid complaint from users.

As to a recall, unnecessary, since Windows Vista works for many.
Including you as you have said in the past shortly after you installed
it.

But then every new operating system you try is great and whatever you
leave is suddenly so bad it should be recalled.

Just wondering how many times you have had to call?

Once so far. Point is, why should I have to call at all ?
Was I replacing anything ? No. Just a batch of updates hosed something. Now
I have ghost running on a trigger. Once anything starts to install, It does
a backup before it starts.

Just wondering how many times you have had to call?

Anything more than ONCE is too many. In fact needing to call at all is
stupid. The whole process is suppose to be automated so if you have
Internet access for the computer you're suppose to be activating that
should do it. The constant spying behind your back, which Microsoft
admits to with Vista phoning home after snooping on your system over
and over to be sure you have a legit copy is both sneaky and unethical
and does nothing to improve Microsoft's lousy reputation with how they
treat customers.

Demanding that you reactivate when you simply replace some hardware is
shameful and of course re enforces the absurd concept that your
computer belongs to Microsoft, not you, and they if you say please
first will let you to continue to use it, but not until you agree to
jump through as many hoops as some moron in Redmond or perhaps in
India decides is necessary. Only fanboys are dumb enough to not only
accept this intrusion into your private affairs, but the lunkheads
fanboys are they unabashedly praise and support the practice without
blinking.

Just FYI. How does one Test Install? Just FYI. Did you install or did you
test install? Just FYI. Did the test install pretend to install? Just
FYI? Did the test install complete and then you installed? Just FYI.

The reboot process was horrible - Yes, you had to wait all that time for
your PC to come up. Just FYI. Horrible. Maybe you should use Ubuntu then
you won't have all those problems. Just FYI.

Why were the results sloppy? Just FYI. Did you eat over the keyboard?
Just FYI.

Just FYI
