Windows UPdate just sits there...WinXP

Okay I am losing my mind, I am trying to reimage a friends PC, it is a HP
Pavilioin 7935 with WinXP Home and I have tried WinXP Pro.

In both cases I completely wipe the hard drive, reinstall the OS and try to
use the Windows Update Web Page to download all the latest and greatest
updates.

When I do this it just continues to set at the window "Checking for the
latest updates for your comptuer..." as the scroll bar just continues to go
on and on and on...

I have found variuos websites on changing this dll, fixing this, and doing
that I and I still can not get anything - I got so frustrated I wiped the
hard drive to start over - no luck.

The funny thing is if I go ahead and change the setting on the windows OS to
automatically download the updates and let me install them - it WORKS ,but I
can NOT go through the web page...

I also went ahead and viewed/tested/implemented the fixes indicated by MS at
this web site - nothing works... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818018

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Before I forget, the computer is connected to netgear router, there is no
other software on this PC yet as it is a fresh install - the connection to MS
web site is being made and my ports are opened...

No firewall/antivirus is installed or running...

That is just asking for trouble. It can take only seconds of such
exposure to infest the computer with malware. (World-wide average time:
I've seen reports of 12 minutes average connection time before invection.)

What service pack do you have installed? If you don't have SP2,
download and install it separately before attempting Windows Update. If
you still have trouble after that, try the troubleshooting advice here:

Yep - my mind is gone I tell you - Updates are driving me nuts :)

But I forgot to mention that I loaded the PC with the WinXP Pro & Home with
SP1 only - that is what is on the system so far - no other udates.

In both instances I am unable to properly use the Updates web page, I then
have to kill off the process SVCHOST as that and IE are taking 100% of my CPU
processing.

Sorry I had forgot to put that in the last update...

In a previous attempt, i had installed the WinXP SP2 as a seperate
installation as I had it on a CD - this did nothing to help with the web
based updates...

I will try your page below and let you know ...

I tried your suggestions and both of it failed - to ensure a completely
sanitized system I reinstalled WinXP Home with SP1, and tried to again - once
again the same problem.

I then went ahead and followed the various steps in your link, which were
the same is what I orignally did in my link - still the problem exists...

Any other suggestions - I can not see anything that would/should be
preventing this - these are fresh installs
