Windows update error - unusual registry entries

J

John L

Win XP Pro SP2

I am attempting to find & apply updates. I get to express or custom and
select custom. I immediately get error 0x800704DD.

When I google it and went to solution, It said to check registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version\WinLogon\Notify\SensLogn

When I went there, there was no Senslogn item. I discovered another registry
folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version\WinLogon\Notify_Disabled\

with the following items -
cscdll
igtxcul
ScCertProp
Schedule
Sclgntfy
SensLogn
termsrv
+WgaLogon
wlballon

When I examined an XP Pro PC that worked, I noticed all the disabled items
were in Notify.

Cna I just move them to \notify or what else? I do not know how this entry
got created.

Don't delete anything from the registry unless you know what your doing. If
you delete an entry and it turns out to be important, you will cause
problems for the PC. Now before you try what I am about to paste, create a
backup of the registry and create a restore point with system restore. But I
found that a guy did the follow and it worked:

Run Regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

1st: I renamed the Notify_Disabled to Notify

2nd: I renamed the Notify to Notify_Disabled
