Windows Update doesn't recognize me as administrator

I have used W/U (manually) several times in the past and
it worked fine. Now when I try to use it I get a page
telling me that only administrators can use it. I am the
only user of this computer and when I go to "User
Information" on the Control Panel it shows me as the only
user (other than "guest") and identifies me as
administrator. I understand that the computer must
recognize me as administrator in order for me to install
new programs, etc. I believe that I am fully protected by
a suite of Symantec tools and a virus scan shows my
computer to be clean. What gives?

I went to the "troubleshoot" site and found exactly the problem that I
was having. I went through exactly the procedure that was described
(after spending a lot of wasted time trying to print it out. Why the
hell does Microsoft do this sort of thing?) The problem is still not
fixed. What do I do next?

Did you check the other two links I suggested?

Everything leads me to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 316524. I went
through the entire procedure described there and I still have the same
problem.
