Windows Update (dialup) downloading same file on different computers?

Is there a way to get windows update (XP Home) to look somewhere
on the LAN first to see if an update file has already been downloaded
on another computer?

On dialup the ever-growing (now 8.2 MB) cumulative IE7 update file
takes an hour on each computer, as it stands. It would save a lot
if just one computer had to fetch it and the rest would check for
it someplace locally first.

Yes, you can go to the Windows catalog, and download any update as a package.
There's a whole 'roll out' server system that lets admins do that remotely.
