Windows Update causing messenger error

I performed the latest Windows Update for XP. It was dated November 15th or
something like that. It is supposed to fix security issues in IE. Well
anyway, the update is humming alond and then it opens a new windows with a
progress bar. It says Please wait while Windows configures Messenger 5.0. At
the end of the update dialog an error appears that says:

An error occurred during the installation of an assembly component
{874793FC-5F43-8FE7-18C4DB9B143D}. HRESULT: -2147024864.

When I click OK on the error message, the Messenger updates seem to be
uninstalling then the installing dialog reappears and the whole thing starts
over. I can't get it to stop and I cannot use Messenger anymore. This is a
very broken update. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do? I'm using
Windows XP on a brand new Tablet PC, and I've only been using it for about a
month.

Wow! I am experiencing the exact same error...I noticed it after I
modified my messenger to 5.0. I am also running this on a tablet PC
(Portege 3500). I find that the messenger notices when others log in,
but when I go to start it...I get the install bar FOREVER then the
error...cancelling the process has no effect on it.

Do you happen to have the EXACT Qarticle number for the update you
suspect.
My updates are managed by SUS server so I can't really knock one down
without it being reapplied within a day or so.

Thanks,
