I got the latest Windows update this morning. Anyone receiving the last
Windows updates and then started to have problems connecting to AOL??

My machine did an automatic update of the latest Windows fixes while I was
surfing the net via AOL, then allowed it to restart the PC. Immediately after
the restart, my AOL can no longer connect to the internet.

I suspected the last Windows update in May did the same, but I wasn't in
front of the machine when it happened like today. I had to go to add/remove
programs a month ago, and reinstall the part of the program to get AOL to
work, and I thought it coincided with the updates in May.

I'm hoping I don't have to muck around everytime there's an update. The last
time it happened, using a prior restore point didn't help at all.

I since looked at the "Windows Update" newsgroup board, and noticed many
other reported problems realted to this AM's update.

Any one with news on what's going on??

If I'm not mistaken, AOL uses a proprietary Dial-up Connection. When
installed, I believe it backs up the originals, and then installs. If you
ever go to un-install, AOL will put everything back. Registry mods are also
made.

WGA (the update), probably re-installed the original files, or changed some
registry settings.

The only solution, at this time:

1. Turn off Automatic Updates, and set to Download and Ask.
2. Turn off the execution of WGATRAY.exe (which is the culprit under
C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\System32\DllCache
3. The next time you check for Updates, turn off downloading the Windows
Genuine Advantage update (you may also want to check ... don't show me
again).

You may need to reinstall AOL to fix this problem, since WGA installation as
probably put things out-of-sync.

Windows 7 update of 16th June 2011 prevented AOL startup.
Did a restore to previous settings and worked fine.
Attempted to query Microsoft on this issue but although I have genuine and registered software site says it is not and wont let me connect.
Perhaps some one can try to get an answer from MS and ascertain which file of the update causes the problem so it can be ignored.
Since Internet Explorer worked fine could this be could this be aRedmond ploy to get us all using I.E?
