I re-installed WinXp this morning and while downloading SP1 (I think) a
popup window entitled "Messenger service" appeared. It warned me that my
registry was corrupted adn that I should go to a website "upgrade32.com" and
download some registry cleaner.

I didnt believe it so I downloaded nothing.

What troubles me is that:

Windows Update may have been hijacked, or
That I may really have a problem.

What do you think?

Thanks

I think you need to enabled the firewall and make
sure Service Pack 2 is installed, as well as all the
recommended critical updates available from the
Windows Update web site.

The incident I detailed occured before service pack 2 was installed (just a
few minutes later). SP2 has been installed, Windows firewall has been
enabled. Windows defender will be installed when I get back to my pc.

What really troubles me is that the incident I described occured while
updating my fresh installion and while 'not' browsing any other sites, nor
doing any other work.

Will Windows Defender show me if my pc has been compromised?

Thanks for your help.

Without a firewall enabled, its quite possible for a virus,
worm, spyware or other malware to enter your system solely
via your internet connection without even launching your
Internet Explorer browser. I would recommend installing
a good antivirus program in addition to Windows Defender.

How does it compare to Microsoft Antispyware Beta? That wasn't on the chart.

The Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta) is now obsolete and
has been replaced by Windows Defender. You need to
uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta) and install the
new Windows Defender program, which is free.
