Windows update and Microsoft update - question

For some reason I have never really noticed it but under the Windows Update
settings box in Vista, I see a section at the bottom called Update Service
with an option to select "Use Microsoft Update".

I searched online and it sounds like if one has, say, Office 2007 then using
MSFT Update is the way to go as it will also search for updates to Office as
well as Windows in one centralised process.

My question is; having the service to use MSFT Update enabled, does it
affect the other settings in Windows Update, such as when to install updates
or whether to just notify of update(s) availability and manually select and
install them?

Hi Rob,

This should answer your question:

Thanks Terry.

So it sounds like Microsoft Update works through Windows Update if the
latter is enabled. So any settings I have will still be valid.

"Microsoft Update", as opposed to windows update was brought out ages ago in
XP; it is not something new.
All you had to do to get it in XP, was to ascertain if your Windows XP was
genuine

Thanks Mick,

I didn't know about it when I had XP. In Vista the option is right there
under the Windows Update window. I've enabled it and it ran some ActiveX
thingy and seems to work - I got Office 2007 updates through it. I was just
curious how Microsoft Update interacted, if at all, with Windows Update and
how my settings under the latter would be affected.

It doesn't change your settings.
