Windows Update 819696

Haim Guivon

I've downloaded and installed Security Update 819696 several times. Via
automatic update, and via Windows Update. In all cases I receive the
message, "successfully installed". I Restart.

Nevertheless, Automatic Update keeps nugging me to install this Update, and
in "Add Remove Programs", this Update is not listed. But, in Windows Update,
Installation History, it appears as "successfully installed", five times in
the different dates I tried to install it.

Can somebody explain to me what this means, and how I can get rid of the
nugging? Is the Update installed? I fear not, but then, why is it listed as
"successfully Installed"?

TIA,
haim

I am having the same problem and have the same question. I
just keep installing it, since my only other option is to
say "remind me later"! Any info on this would be greatly
appreciated. How can we notify Microsoft of this issue?

Last week I had a run of repeated offers of downloading of Q819696 after an
apparently successful installation. Fortunately I had a system restore
point to go back to, and the notification balloon stopped. Then it was the
turn of the nagging of the notion that there was a gaping hole in the
security of my computer system that I finally gave in and started to take a
closer look at this hotfix. There are two versions listed in the Windows
Update Catalogue: 799KB and 948KB, otherwise they are identical (Can't tell
the difference from there!), including their respective write-ups. However,
reading the 'Read more...', I discovered I could upgrade my DirectX 8.1 to
9.0 *and* the fix all in one go, i.e. installing DirectX 9.0b. That was in
the end what I did. From then on the balloon bothered me no more, and no
nagging.

To find what version of DirectX you have:
[Start] > [Run] > Type in dxdiag > OK

To learn more about the different flavours of the updates:
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-030
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-030.asp?frame=true

This is how I evaded the problem, not fixing it. DirectX9.0b is 7.9MB,
mind.
