Windows takes a long time to log off

I have read a couple of threads that addressed situations close to mine, but
none of the answers have helped my situation. I have a Dell Dimension E521
with an AMD Athlon 64x2 4000+ 2.1Ghz processor, 2GB RAM, and Windows Vista
Home Edition Premium. When the computer has been on all day, and you try and
shut it down, Windows will sometimes take 5 to 10 minutes to start the
log-off procedure. Other times it will log off as soon as you click the
"shut-down" button. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? It
almost acts like there is a program running that Windows is trying to shut
down before it logs off, but I can't figure it out.

Thank you for that tip - as a new convert from XP!

Would have been the same deal in XP :)
Only difference may be that windows (vista) is performing background tasks
while your pc has been idle.
Defragging etc.
