windows\system32\config\system error

My PC crased earlier this week after two years of flawless
service. Now when i turn it on i get a message saying the
config files are missing or corrupt. i have lost the
original XP disk. i have tried the following,
* using last best config (no use)
* starting in safe mode (no use)
* and trying a repair where i have to copy the config
file to another folder but it cannot comply as it cannot
fing the config files

Any suggestions gratefully received

Get another XP disk from a friend and boot from that disc

thank you but that doesnt appear to work. tmp file is
created but after second command i get a message saying
file can not be copied.
