I got a virus not too long ago (and it is still here somewere) and since I
got it, whenever I restart my computer, I get a DOS screen that pops up and
is minimized. It then stays that way for about 15 seconds and then
dissappears. The path for the program is "windows\system32\cmd.exe." I am
thinking this could be part of my ongoing virus problems, but I am afraid to
do anything to it since I have no idea what it does. It is not listed in the
startup list (as far as I can tell). Is this important or should I get rid
of it?

Anyone who has gotten a virus knows it is a little harder than that. When
you cannot find the name(s) of the virus(s) that have infected your computer
and they have evaded your virus scanner, it is very difficult to remove them.
But that is not the question. I am asking about this specific file, not
about my viruses.

The path you have quoted is to the command prompt program. The file
"cmd.exe" is a windows program & should not be deleted. You need to find out
what is causing your PC to open a command prompt during boot and I must
admit it could be anywhere. What virus scanner do you use. You could try
downloading "stinger" from mcafee's website that should find and remove any
trojans.

or try an online scanner

Try Start-->Run-->msconfig and see if you can find it under
the StartUp tab. Report what you find here.

I ran stinger and it found one virus. Then, I went into msconfig and found
the culprit.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\mc-110-12-0000080.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\mc-110-12-0000080.exe

I then searched through my computer and found every file named
mc-110-12-0000080.exe and deleted it. I then unchecked those two files from
msconfig and restarted. The DOS screen didn't pop up. So, I restarted it
again everything seems to be running normal. But, those two files are still
listed in msconfig. How do I get rid of those? The programs are not there
anymore, so shouldn't they be gone? Thanks anyways for all of your help!

Nevermind all of that nonsense above. I looked in the registry and found the
paths and deleted them both. Now they are not listed in the startup stuff in
msconfig. It seems like problem solved, for now. :( But thanks again for
everyone's help. And oh yeah, screw virus makers! Pardon my French. :)
