Windows Suddenly Starting Slower; Services to Turn Off

O

Obsidian Tyranitar

Hello.
When I start up my computer, it used to take about 30 seconds to reach the
login prompt, and after logging in, used to take 40-50 seconds for my
desktop to get to an 'idle' state. A while back, forgot exactly how long
ago, my computer began taking *5-10 minutes* for the computer to reach said
state. If I were to try to run applications, use Control Panel applets, or
anything lanuched by rundll32, during this time, it would seem to be added
to a queue, and after this 5-10 min time was up all the applications would
load. It happens only during a normal boot, not a clean boot.

Also, I'm running Windows XP Professional in a home environment, with a
network of 4 computers. What services should I turn off to optimize speed,
loading time, and security? I highly doubt I need all these services.

Are there a lot of programs running in the background?
IE: A lot of icons next to your clock etc...
You can disable some of those. Either make them not start automatically or
uninstall them all together depending on what they are.
Also I would recommend checking for adware, spyware, worms, viruses etc...
I know your running a firewall, at least I hope so since your networked
probably to a router which comes with a firewall. But that doesn't mean it's
imposible to become infected. Try these programs/Websites to see if they
give any insight to your problem:

AdAware:

Spybot S & D:

Check for Parasites/Worms:
