I have a Dell notebook that was somehow set up to require ctl-alt-del at
startup. This brings up a password window.
I would like to get rid of both of these and I would be grateful if someone
would tell me how.

Thanks.

control panel, user accounts, delete all users 'cept for administrator,
click change password on admin account and see if you can leave it with
no password.

That's terrible advice. Why would you tell the OP to delete all his users?
All he needs to do is go to User Accounts and check "Use the Welcome
Screen". To remove the requirement to use Ctrl-Alt-Del all his has to do
is: Start>Run>control userpasswords2 [enter]

He will see where he can uncheck that logon requirement. And here's some
more information about automatic logon (if the OP desires):

Judging by flamer's last few replies, it seems that he/she needs to bone up
a bit on XP before offering any more advice.
