Windows Shut Down

When I try to shut down windows it goes to the Windows XP window then says
"Downloading 1 of 1" or something close to that, then it goes over to "Do not
turn off or unplug your computer, it will shut down automatically". I've let
it run like this, switching back and forth between messages for about 6 hours
at two different times and it has never shut down. When I restart after
turning the power off, when I try to shut down, it goes back to the download
message. IF it is downloading updates, should it be taking this long?

Last night one of our PC began doing the same thing. Upon
shutdown the screen says "Downloading 1 of 3" then "Do
not turn off or unplug your computer, it will shut down
automatically." It continued alternating screens until 6
AM when I turned it off. A virus scan revealed nothing.
I checked the Windows update page for download history,
and the last installed update was XP SP2 last month.
This morning the process was repeated on shutdown. Any
suggestions?

My mother-in-law computer is doing a similar thing. Last when she told the
computer to shutdown. It when to a Windows XP shutdown screen, which stated,
"Installing update 1 of 2. do not turn off or unplug your computer, it will
shut down automatically." This started at 8pm last night. The same message
was there is morning an 6 am. I did not shutdown the computer due to bad
termination with prevoius Windows shutdown during updates.

What is causing the update to hang?

I am having the same issue. I just started on 10/12. The first time I just
forced the shutdown. This morning I disabled my cable modem and left the pc
to it's own devices. I am sure that it will be the same way when I return
this evening. If anyone at Microsoft is monitoring this forum, I think that
a patch is very much needed.

maybe for a temp fix you could disable automatic updates see if that stops
it if not uninstall sp2 as previous post did...it is something to do with
the sp2 update been searching knowledge base and have not found answer
yet... are you using the windows firewall or third party ? just a thought
as they can conflict ...causing probs...
if i find anything will post...maybe try manual update see if it can finish
that way??

Try this,,,control panel...open up system check auto update tab check"notify
me but dont update" check Apply.
restart
then on restart let the computer download updates
hopefully it will shutdown now ....its worth a try anyway

apparantly there is somekind of issue with some of these up dates requiring
a licence agreement which is causing problem....not very well thoughtout by

I have had this problem since yesterday on WINXP with SP2 installed.
Just go to the automatic updates there is a critical update for this.
It has solved the problem here.

Likewise, I cured it by turning off auto update, going to windows update
and manually downloading the available updates and installing them. When
restarted, turn auto updates back on.

Seems ok now.

As Sophie and Adam suggested... I went to Microsoft Home page and MANUALLY
downloaded any needed updates and turned off the Autodownload (START > RUN>
wscui.cpl ). I can now shut down my computer without it going through that
download process.
Thanks!!!!
