after using and enjoying windows mail for several months with no problems I
now have a window that says that I need to log on and verify a username and
password... I am clueless as to why this has just now started and I am sue I
have never committed a password to windows mail

Can anyone help?

Windows Mail doesn't require a password. However, every mail account you
set up in Windows Mail requires a username and password for server access.
You can edit those entries by going to Tools, Accounts, select your account,
Properties, Servers.
